Flipping the Switch on a Better Life for You

How To Accomplish What You Want in 2020

Not just a New Year, but a new decade! Several people have mentioned that the year 2020 seems to hold some promise for good things to come. How can you make sure of it for yourself?

I have been thinking about this a lot for myself. I realized that I am most able to accomplish a goal when I do more than just set the goal. I have to make a plan to reach it.

For example, with a weight loss goal, the first thing is to identify exactly what changes are needed in your habits. Less alcohol, less sugar, less bread and pasta, less processed foods? Any of those changes should yield weight loss from lowered calories, as long as you only substitute healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.

To make it work, write down all the times that foods you are trying to avoid come up suddenly. Think of work birthday parties, family celebrations, and spontaneous meals out, times of stress or fatigue or frustration when you want something nice. Then write down ways you can substitute a different food or activity. This way you have a game plan that will prevent you from having to make a last-minute decision that often begins with, “well, just this once.”

If food is a reward for you, write down other ways you can reward yourself in a non-caloric way. What do you really enjoy that gives you a special time? This is also a good strategy for your kids so they know other ways to have pleasure than sugary treats.

You may also want to plan a time when you can indulge yourself, such as a once a week treat that you can look forward to so that you don’t feel deprived all the time.

If fitness is your goal and you know you need to exercise more write down exactly how and when you will do that. Make agreements with friends and family members to exercise together. Hikes, walks, and nature outings are great family affairs for all ages. Set some milestones, such as distance, ability gained, or time spent so that you can chart your success.

If you are planning to take a class, write down the schedule to sign up and the schedule to attend.  Career moves can also be planned on paper.

Somehow writing down plans just makes them stick better, and gives you something to refer back to if you get off schedule. And if you are over-scheduled you can even plan some time to take a break and take a breath.

Breaking it down into small steps can also help. Choose one of your goals and work on it for a month. Groove it in so it becomes a habit. Then find the next thing you want to improve.

Most success comes from reaching targets along the way. There is always something you can plan that will result in an improvement in an area of your life that you don’t have under your control. It may mean some rearrangement of your time, and energy expenditure, such as forgoing some television time to use in pursuit of your life plans. It can also mean getting more cooperation from the family so that tasks are distributed more equally.

Getting healthier, fitter, and having a better life isn’t difficult. There are so many possible small changes to make. If I can help you with your own plan, let me know. What would be the benefits of making those changes? That is personal and unique to you. We have more control over our health and our lives than we realize. If that is true for you, you are ready to take a step forward to a happier and more purposeful life, for yourself, and for the people and things you care about.

May 2020 be your boldest year ever!

How Much Sugar Is Too Much?

We know that there is an epidemic of Diabetes around the Western World.  Why now? Sugar has been around since 509 BC Emperor Darius of Persia invaded India and discovered sugar cane, “the reed which gives honey without bees.

When the Arabs spread their culture through in the 7th Century they discovered sugar in Persia and the secret of the sweet spice was out. Sugar was first recorded in London in 1099. The Venetians first refined sugar in the 15th Century. Columbus took sugar cane plants to the Caribbean and a new industry was born in the New World.

By 1750, there were 120 sugar refineries in Great Britain. Beets were identified as a source of sugar in 1747, but not used in quantity until the Napoleonic Wars caused the British to blockade sugar cane to the rest of Europe. Sugar beets became the main source of sugar to Europe, as a result. Today about 40 million tons of sugar are produced worldwide. Sugar has been big business since England built refineries and the government was able to tax and control the business of sugar. http://www.sucrose.com/lhist.html

In today’s world sugar comes in many other forms: agave, high fructose corn syrup, honey, maple syrup to name a few. Which is the healthiest choice for you?

Here are some definitions and descriptions to help you sort out the sweets.

1.     White sugar or pure refined sugar. It is 99.9% sucrose, which is a double sugar molecule and the body breaks it down into glucose and fructose.

2.     Caster sugar means smaller granules of refined white sugar.

3.     Icing sugar or powdered sugar-dissolves better in liquids or egg whites.

4.     Raw sugar-similar to white sugar in nutrient value, but brown colored.

5.     Brown sugar is sucrose with 5% molasses added. This gives a tiny amount of minerals and nutrients.

6.     Fructose, the fruit sugar, is metabolized differently. It is a single sugar molecule. Pure refined fructose is converted to body fat more easily than glucose. It is released more slowly when consumed with the fiber from whole fruit.

7.     Glucose is the form of sugar that your body actually uses for cellular energy. It is also a single sugar molecule. Athletes will take pure glucose (called Dextrose) for extreme athletic events. If not utilized by the body for energy it will be converted to fats (called triglycerides) by the liver and then stored as body fat. http://foodwatch.com.au/blog/carbs-sugars-and-fibres/item/7-types-of-sugar-which-is-healthier.html

8.     Agave nectar or syrup is 90% fructose. It is not more nutritious than sugar, despite its reputation.

9.     High fructose corn syrup is made from cornstarch and contains 55% fructose and 45% glucose. Because it is made from corn, a government subsidized crop, it is much cheaper than sugar, but just as sweet. Regular corn syrup is glucose (called Dextrose on food labels) and is not as sweet. High fructose corn syrup requires a number of chemical processes to convert part of the glucose into fructose. This fructose is not necessarily natural because of the chemical processing and may alter the taste in foods, despite the sweetness.

The Vaccine Question

Whenever you have two sides feeling passionately about an issue, it may be time to regroup and take a new look at the issue.  As a holistic practitioner with a Western health science degree, I have been very interested in the issue of vaccination, and the safety factor. I wrote my first research paper on vaccination injury as an undergraduate at Ohio State University. I learned then that our approach to vaccination is inadequate and risky.

Would parents be against safe immunization that truly protected their child and was also completely safe?  Perhaps those with religious reasons oppose vaccination altogether.  But many concerned parents are not “anti” vaccine. They are simply anti a medical procedure that has not been proven safe and effective. The question is whether the risk of vaccination injury outweighs any benefit. The definition of immunity is the recognition of a pathogen and an immediate and correct response from the immune system so that the pathogen is contained before the disease has a chance to take hold.

This is not what current vaccinations do for children. Vaccinations stimulate an immune response, but in infants it is not the correct response. Until about the age of 1 year, infants get an immune response that weakens their immune system, instead of strengthening it. http://gaetacommunications.com/site/?p=1092

True immunity is not established by vaccination and that is why booster shots are required. http://biology.stackexchange.com/questions/5782/at-what-age-do-babies-begin-to-synthesize-their-own-antibodies

If you are getting your information from the general media, please understand that you are being woefully misinformed. Media is run by corporate interests, so you are getting the “company line” of the pharmaceutical companies. For many children vaccination is a “clear and present danger”, to borrow a term from the military. Even the CDC Chief has admitted publicly (on CNN) that some children, about one in sixty, carry genetic information that might lead to autism, if there is a trigger, such as vaccinations or other trauma. That is a pretty high number of kids to put at risk. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/04/22/head-of-cdc-admits-on-cnn-that-vaccines-can-trigger-autism.aspx

There have been no long-term studies on the safety of the multiple vaccinations that are being performed today. And injecting a child’s body with 49 doses of vaccination before age six and 69 doses before age eighteen, with no long-term studies, seems like a crapshoot. In the U.S. there have been no reported cases of Diphtheria for years, and there are only 4-5,000 cases worldwide, yet it is still on the infant vaccination schedule.

For a table of contagious disease statistics worldwide see this from WHO. http://apps.who.int/immunization_monitoring/globalsummary/timeseries/tsincidencediphtheria.html

There are other worrisome factors. After 1988, the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine was grown on fetal tissue from aborted fetuses. Some of the fetal tissue gets injected with the vaccine. After this, autism rates spiked. This is documented, and not a myth. Regardless of how you feel about abortion, does it make any sense to use human tissue to inject in an infant? The fetal tissue used has been “grown” from earlier fetal cells, so it is not supposed to be fresh fetal tissue. Nevertheless, the safety of these vaccines has not been established. http://www.vaccine-tlc.org/human

Heavy metals such as aluminum and mercury (thimerosal) are used in vaccines.  We know that heavy metal toxicity is a risk factor for all humans.

The C-section rate in the United States is 25%. The baby’s gut is seeded with vital flora as the baby passes through the birth canal and receives healthy bacteria orally from the mother’s vagina. Often women who have a C-section birth do not breast-feed. The immune system of a newborn is dependent on vaginal birth and the immunological factors in mother’s milk. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-to-establish-a-healthy-gut-in-your-primal-baby/#axzz3bPTzuQLR

The umbilical cords of newborns contain 200 environmental toxins, according to studies. This means that the infant is exposed before it leaves the womb. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/newborn-babies-chemicals-exposure-bpa/

Perhaps autism is a perfect storm of factors that could be controlled. We can reduce the toxic burden in the environment. We can improve maternal nutrition and health care to reduce C-section rates. We can encourage breast-feeding.

And we can do the studies and research to make safe and effective vaccines. One safe alternative may be homeopathic vaccines called “homeoprophylaxis”. HP has been used for cholera, polio, meningitis and other diseases. The level of protection is comparable to pharmaceutical vaccines, with absolutely no risks of adverse effects or injury. In fact, the homeopathic approach may actually strengthen the immune system, rather than assault it. http://hpworldwidechoice.com/What_is_Homeoprophylaxis.php

And we can uphold the rights of all parents to make health decisions for their family. Remember that giving up freedoms to central controls is never a good road to travel. It inevitably leads to less freedom for everyone.

Given the fact that we have rising childhood statistics on obesity, asthma, cancer, developmental and behavioral problems, and autoimmune issues, along with autism, I suggest that the Pharmaceutical companies should be required to do everything it takes to ensure the long-term health and well being of our children. It is very possible that the current method of vaccination will seem as wrong-headed as bloodletting, in years to come. Parents are now trained to take their kids to the doctors on regular schedules, which makes money for the pediatricians, but has not produced a healthier generation of kids. No one is demanding that Pharmaceutical companies take responsibility for what they inject in our children. In fact, the law says that you cannot sue for vaccine injury, except in a special Vaccine Injury Court. If vaccines are so safe, why pass such a law?

If you choose to vaccinate, there are ways to do it more safely, and I am happy to pass on that information. But I also ask that you respect the health freedom of those who choose not to vaccinate, whether for religious or health reasons. Denying basic rights like personal choices about medical treatment is a slippery slope. The next freedom to be taken away may be one that you hold dear.

Herd immunity theory is a completely unproven, and I suggest that it is used to frighten parents into compliance. Your immune system does not care at all whether my immune system is immunized or not. You are a separate system completely, and you will fight your own immune battles and I will fight mine.  We already have very high numbers of vaccinated children, and almost no contagious childhood disease.  We need to focus on other health issues for our kids, like nutrition and physical activity. A healthy diet, beginning with breast milk as an infant, will do more for the immune system and protection from disease than almost any other measure. We can agree on one important thing. We want the best possible health for our children.
